Picture Perfect: Sunset Sunday in Hazelton, PA

Yesterday, a family reunion took me out to Pennsylvania.  I got to tour the Eckley Miners’ Village and see what living conditions were like for my family who worked in the coal mines.  I don’t have too much information (yet) about this side of my family, and being there in PA, where they all first settled when they came to this country was very inspiring.

The sun sets on a fabulous family weekend.

We ate dinner at the Top of the 80s restaurant in Hazelton, PA.  There, we had a beautiful view throughout the evening – complete with a sky that rained skydivers.  As the sun set, I knew I had to try to capture this breathtaking moment of a very special weekend.  Once I saw the photo on my computer this afternoon, it screamed “Sunset Sunday” and I just had to share it with you…

Picture Perfect: Sunset Sunday in the Snow

The peaceful pastels of a winter sunset in New Jersey

About a week ago (before the recent warm weather melted the snow away) I took this picture in Mercer County at sunset.

A quiet road was the perfect setting to appreciate the contrast between the stillness of the snow-covered ground and the colorful movement in the ever-changing sky…

Happy Sunset Sunday.

Picture Perfect: Fire and Ice

Sunset in Franklin Park

Last week (when there wasn’t as much snow on the ground as there is now) I caught a shot of the sunset in Franklin Park – near the preserved open space on South Middlebush Road.

The fiery sun in the distance reminded me that the frozen ground and bare branches won’t stay that way for long…

Enjoy your Sunday!

Picture Perfect – Sunsets Saved in Time

As you probably already know, I am a huge fan of Craig Zabranksy’s work.

So, you can imagine my delight when I saw his January 9th Sunset Sunday post was a New Jersey one.  Zabransky’s vibrant photos and sunsets-saved-in-time make up for his misconceptions about New Jersey (which I’m very happy to see he’s correcting).

This week’s Picture Perfect photos are just one click away on Zabranksy’s Stay Adventurous site…

Picture Perfect: Shopping by Sunset in NJ

Shopping by Sunset in NJ

New Jersey is known for having a lot of malls.  In fact, according to www.50states.com, North Jersey has the most shopping malls in one area in the world – seven major shopping malls just in a 25 sq. mile radius!  Additionally, there are plenty of strip malls throughout the state to help you find pretty much anything your heart desires.  I’ve certainly become accustomed to knowing that I can take a rather short trip and find whatever it is I’m looking for.  To me, these malls are the contemporary translation of our state’s significant industrial history and part of the New Jersey charm.

Here is a photo that I took while shopping at the Franklin Towne Center mall in Franklin Park, NJ…

Picture Perfect: Memories

The moments when my father, camera in hand, called me out onto our back porch to see whatever magnificent thing the sky was doing at that time are moments that will stay with me forever.  Without using words – other than those it took for him to call my attention to a full moon, a bright star, or a colorful sunset – he was teaching me to appreciate the beautiful world around me.  To this day, they’re probably some of the most valuable lessons I’ve experienced.

They’re lessons that have always seemed to influence my writing, and more recently, they’ve helped shape my appreciation for travel and photography.

Just the other evening when I was at my sister’s house, she, her husband, and I were talking in their kitchen when we saw the sky do some pretty magnificent things. We didn’t hesitate to walk outside in order to get a closer look; I grabbed my camera, and they grabbed theirs.  With our conversation on an unspoken pause, we captured what we could…

Picture Perfect: Get Hooked on a New Jersey Sunset…

Today’s Picture Perfect photo is one I took while at an art exhibit, at the Barron Arts Center in Woodbridge, showcasing beautifully crafted hooked rugs with a New Jersey theme.  The entire feature about this exhibit will be posted shortly.  In the mean time, please enjoy this photo of a rug called “SUNSET at the JERSEY SHORE”  that was hooked by Debbie Walsh of Cranford, NJ and designed by Norma Batastini…

Hooked rug, "SUNSET at the JERSEY SHORE" by Debbie Walsh

Walsh is happy to share a little background about how her rug was made and where she found the inspiration: “This rug is based on a photo that I took of my two daughters at the beach in Wildwood Crest many years ago.  I began hooking this rug at a rug school at the Chalfonte Hotel in Cape May.  Some mixed media materials have been used in addition to hand dyed wool.”
